The first national gay rights organization, the Mattachine Society, was founded in Los Angeles in 1950. Their fight for liberation and equality has been whitewashed out of much of the history of the LGBTQ+ rights movement.Įach historical era determined not only how Black and brown people who identify as gay lived, but also what they risked losing by revealing their sexual preference or identity. As Black and brown people, their marginalization was furthered by their sexual orientation, causing violence, discrimination, and oppression toward them with respect to income, employment, housing, education, political representation, access to health care, and other public and private services. But one piece of history that frequently gets lost is the fact that many of these defining moments were only made possible by Black and brown LGBTQ+ activists fighting for their liberation. Pride Month, which comes to an end this week, is a time to celebrate the moments in queer history that sparked activism and progress toward equality. They’re usually about sex, lifestyle, sex, the office, sex and hot guys with big bulging arms/legs/cocks. That all sounds well and good but when it comes to gay memes, they’ve got to be funny. ‘A meme is an idea, behaviour, or style that becomes a fad and spreads by means of imitation from person to person within a culture and often carries symbolic meaning representing a particular phenomenon or theme. A meme acts as a unit for carrying cultural ideas, symbols, or practices, that can be transmitted from one mind to another through writing, speech, gestures, rituals, or other imitable phenomena with a mimicked theme.’ What’s meme? First of all you pronounce it ‘meem’, not ‘me-me’ which you’ll often hear people say, getting it wrong in the process with humourous effect. Shawn Mendes stars in a gay meme, pretty sure he wouldn't have given permission! One evening he is riding his bicycle bare-chested wearing bobby socks and loose baggy shorts and a hard prick when a man offers him a ride in his convertible. The Kristen Archives - Just Gay and Bi-sexual Stories It startled us in the beginning and at first we thought that maybe we’re drawing gay women.” After reviewing fan mail and Web sites about the show they realized it was a lot of straight women. “All of us working on the show, Showtime in the States and Showcase in Canada, expected to have predominantly a gay male audience.” Because most of the lead characters are male, the assumption was that “the group of people portrayed would likely be the people watching the show. “At the beginning it really surprised me,” says Queer As Folk producer Sheila Hockin. When Gay Chicago folded in September after a respectable 35-year run, the LGBT community lost a popular media outlet, a venerable bar rag, yes, but a brand that had an undeniably loyal readership. It’s a fitting moniker, as Chicago Phoenix features key staff members plucked from the mastheads of the now-defunct Gay Chicago and Chicago Free Press, including co-founder Dane Tidwell, former managing publisher of Gay Chicago, and Tony Merevick, the former online editor for Chicago Free Press and opinion columnist for Gay Chicago. The whole "coming out of the closet" and "queer comedy" thing has been done to death. I just can't relate to any of those genres. Just like westerns, hood movies and gore films don't really nab my attention in the least. I don't mind gay characters in the least, no matter their roles, if it's not on completely gay centric movies, which don't particularly interest me. Most movies focus on the homosexuality aspects and the whole plot swirls around it to the point only gay people and others who relate to gay movies end up going to the theater. Hollywood likes to portray gay characters as well. I would like to see gay characters dealing with ordinary or even extraordinary events, with their personal qualities only underscoring the story. My life is not just a trashy romance novel. Darling_Jimmy: I, for one, am tired of that formula.
